step 1 – get in touch

Step one to becoming a foster carer here in Carmarthenshire is to reach out to us. As soon as you give us a call or send us that email, your journey has begun. It might not feel like much of a step, but marks the start of something life changing.

step 2 – the home visit

The next step is getting to know you. We’ll get started with a visit to your home, if possible, or a video call. It’s important for us to build up a relationship with you from the start, so we can learn all about you – who means the most to you, where you call home, and how you see yourself as a foster carer.

step 3 – the training

We deliver a three-day training course, which gives you the opportunity to meet the Foster Wales Carmarthenshire team as well as other foster carers in the community. The course is friendly and informal and provides you with the skills and information you need.

step 4 – the assessment

An assessment might sound daunting, but it’s simply an opportunity for us to look at how your family works. It’ll provide you all with the chance to ask any questions and learn all about what fostering will mean for you. Assessments are carried out by skilled social workers, who take into account your family unit’s strengths and vulnerabilities.

It’s about preparing for the different challenges and rewards that you may encounter through fostering.

step 5 – the panel

Your assessment will be considered by our panel, which is made up of knowledgeable, experienced social care workers and independent members. Each person on the panel will look at the potential foster carer as an individual.

The panel isn’t in place to give your journey the go ahead, or put it to a halt. It’s about evaluating your application and determining the best option for you.

step 6 – the foster care agreement

The foster care agreement is a written agreement that sets out the responsibilities of you as a foster carer, as well as the services and expertise we’ll deliver to you as your support network. This agreement is made after your assessment has been considered by the panel.
