the story of

ruth

Ruth changed her life completely after recovering from a serious illness 10 years ago – she decided she wanted to foster children who need a loving and safe home in Carmarthenshire.

the foster family

Ruth lives with her 22-year-old daughter, Alice, and has been fostering for nearly 9 years.

“I always wanted to foster but life got in the way. Then about 10 years ago I became very seriously ill. Thankfully, I pulled through but it really made me think about what was important to me, and how much I actually wanted to foster.”

Fostering has changed Ruth’s life. She has learned so many skills with the help of our local Foster Wales Carmarthenshire team and has become more and more confident when taking on different children and placements.

“Through working with the Local Authority fostering team I’ve met loads of foster carers and social workers who are just amazing people.”

“support, day in, day out”

Being a single parent doesn’t mean Ruth is alone. We are one big team here in Carmarthenshire – we’re in it together. We are always available whether it’s for advice, support, training, or just to listen.

“They support people day-in, day-out. The support they give us is just incredible, they are absolute heroes.”

“fostering has changed all of our lives”

For Ruth, fostering is a big part of her life. It’s not just a job. It’s a chance to love people who don’t know what being loved feels like. Ruth feels the benefits of fostering outweigh any challenges along the way, especially with her two foster children who she has been looking after for 6 years.

“They’ve come a long way since then. It’s been a rollercoaster but to see them both doing really well in school and growing into caring young people just makes it all worth it.”

It’s about building better futures for children in your local community, and that’s exactly what Ruth does.

“I’m proud that I can give these children the kind of home that many of us take for granted. My daughter is now a primary school teacher, so I like to think that fostering has inspired us all.”
